It is a circular route. The starting point is the neighbourhood of Canela. This is a fishing village on the Guadiana River itself, located 2 km from the mouth of the river. Once we are ready, we descend the Guadiana River, enjoying wonderful views of the marshes on the Spanish side and the beautiful village of Vila Real de Santo Antonio on the Portuguese side.

We then enter the labyrinth of the San Bruno marsh, where we will find a completely natural environment full of birds and all the vegetation typical of tidal marshes. We then come out at the mouth of the Guadiana, where we will find natural beaches with a dune system protected by sand islands. This is where we will make our first stop. We will continue along the route, crossing into Portugal and stopping at a beautiful cove called Ponta na Areia, where we will find a unique bar where we can have a drink. Upon request, lunch can be arranged at this idyllic spot. The next step is to return to the starting point in the neighbourhood of Canela.

The route is favourable in terms of tide and wind, so the difficulty is medium. We take advantage of the tidal current to make the route easy and accessible. At the entrance to the labyrinth of the San Bruno marshes, we can go deeper or shallower depending on the interests of the participants, which allows us to modify the distance travelled according to the group’s interests. The route covers between 5.3 km and 7.5 km, depending on weather conditions, the time booked and the average level of the group.

During the route, we will tell you the fascinating naval history of the Guadiana estuary, focusing on the different peoples who have arrived by sea and the events that have taken place in the region, such as: the establishment of the Tartessians and Phoenicians, the Romans, the passage of the Vikings, the sinking of the Concepción, the naval battle of Ayamonte in 1624 and the sinking of the San Bruno.

This route is undoubtedly the most interesting we offer due to the diversity of the landscapes and ecosystems you will visit.

This route can be combined with the experience of eating at a pleasant beach bar located in a small cove on the Portuguese shore (upon request).
